That´s a thought I kept coming back to this week.
It started after a few conversations I had where people were fascinated by my story.
From cardiac surgeon… to corporate MD… to portfolio career.
Their faces lit up, there were the “wows”, but always with a mix of admiration and confusion.
Like, “Wow… that’s amazing” and “I don’t know where to place you.”
Then I read this stat in a manager magazine:
📊 48% of people have pivoted their careers at least once. What??? That´s half of the population 🤯
And of those? Three-quarters are happier now.
It made me pause. Because clearly, we’re not the exception, we’re becoming the norm.
And yet? Most of the corporate world hasn’t caught up.
If your CV isn’t a neat, upward-trending ladder, you’re labeled “confusing.”
Try explaining a multi-chapter career to an AI screening tool. Or a recruiter who just wants the easy win. And it´s not always easy to get access to someone smart and visionary enough to see your potential beyond the bullet points.
But here’s what I know to be true:
You don’t change paths because you’re lost.
You pivot because you’ve outgrown where you were.
And sure, telling that story takes more work.
But you know what’s harder?
Staying stuck in a life that no longer fits you, just because it’s easier to explain on a CV.
A little reminder for you, if you’re in the middle of a pivot: you’re not behind. You’re not broken.
You’re evolving. And in the end? That’s the only career that lasts.
See you next week,
Dr. Kerstin
